TAKING IT STEP BY STEP

Erika Jackson of Harrisburg spreads out six children’s
photographs on the table in her suburban home, lining them up, moving them
around like puzzle pieces, each photo showing a different child in a single
pose. The Jackson household is a yours-and-mine situation, a stepfamily in
which most of the children have, at one time or another, lived under the same
roof with their father and stepmother. For some, such a living arrangement can
be a prescription for disaster. For others, it’s a safe cocoon comprised of
people who love and/or respect each other as people, whether or not they’re
related by blood.

SCHOOL SPIRITS

American tweens are not just discovering Hannah Montana,
skateboards and Wii consoles. They are also exploring mom and dad’s liquor
cabinets. The children of Central PA report their first alcohol use –
more than a sip or two – at the average age of 12.8, and they’re drinking
regularly at an average of 14.5, according to the Pennsylvania Commission on
Crime and Delinquency’s 2005 Pennsylvania Youth Survey.

Raising the Stakes: Gambling in Pennsylvania

The view from the front porch of Thomas Klepper’s home in
East Hanover Township consists of Blue Mountain in the background and the
midstate’s first slots parlor in the foreground. The Hollywood Casino at Penn
National, which opened in February, is literally across the street. “It’s good
that you can walk to the casino,” Klepper says. “I just won 30 bucks, but I
know a lot of other people who won a lot more.” But whether a casino makes for
a good neighbor depends on who you ask.
