World Without End
Ken Follett, Penguin Group, 2007,
$35 (hardcover)
I am currently reading World Without End , the sequel to my favorite novel of
all time, Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. The stories take place during the 14th and
12th centuries, respectively, a fascinating time in human history. Central to
the plotline is the building of a cathedral. I have no skills whatsoever to
build just about anything, but having a deep appreciation for
Renaissance-period church architecture, I find that my long-sought desire to
possess the imagination and skills of an architect (not necessarily in the
image of George Costanza) can be realized through immersing myself in these
readings.

Michael Palin: Himalaya
BBC, 2005, $49.98
Prices climb at home, and the dollar
drops in value abroad. What is a person to do? A bit of armchair travel may be
in order, and your ticket to far-off lands is the DVD Himalaya with Michael Palin.
The BBC production takes you on a 2,000-mile trek through Pakistan, India and
other countries of Asia. Tibet has been in the news of late and is a featured
stop. Breathtaking scenery and great wit abound.
