WITF UPDATE

A Message from the President

Next month’s issue of Central PA will look, and be, different. It’s been almost five years since we last looked at the magazine’s design, focus and branding approach. In the magazine world, that’s practically an eon.

Our goal is to give you, our readers, a handsome package for your favorite features and articles. For advertisers, we want Central PA to be their preferred showcase for their products, services and brand messages. For our staff and our organization, we want Central PA to be a tangible reflection of our commitment to this region — its people, its history and its many lifestyles.

So you’ll see some changes. The cover and logo have been redesigned and freshened. I think you’ll see a more open, contemporary look to the type and to the layout. We believe the cover will more effectively convey the contents of the book in this new approach.

The “front of the book” (as magazine types refer to the first group of pages) will highlight what’s new, what’s intriguing and what’s simply excellent. That could be local people, or new products or great new attractions or activities. The Thirty Days calendar section will be renamed Out and About. The events calendar will be more selective, providing more information on each highlighted event, while directing readers to the region’s most comprehensive listing — which is found at www.centralpa.org.

Some things won’t change — television and radio listings, for example, or the quality of the writing you’ve come to expect. The Phantom Diner will still swoop in with the latest intelligence from the tables of the region’s restaurants. There will be one “blast from the past,” however: The crossword will return.

In short, we plan to strengthen the key focus of Central PA: to have our readers feel like they’re neighbors — connecting them to each other through great writing, handsome photography and inventive graphics and design. As residents of Central PA, we share a special place. Together we honor its history, celebrate its leaders and puzzle over its problems. We want Central PA to be the magazine that chronicles what makes us happy and special, as well as what divides and distracts us. It’s a job that never ends, but which is worth doing — every month.

Meanwhile, in this month’s issue, we’ll report on how to make your investments do double duty: increase your net worth and improve the quality of life on our planet, too. That’s socially conscious investing. Food and cooking are perennial favorites with Central PA readers: This month (in addition to The Phantom) we’ll explore dining on a budget.

As always, we appreciate your comments. I can be reached at 800-366-9483, or via e-mail at kathleen_pavelko@witf.org.
